The water lily – also called gecko, midnight crab and night flower – is an aquatic plant. In very dry years, the plant doesn't even appear, but its lime remains buried in the ground and, if not destroyed by fire, it sprouts again in the flood of the Pantanal. The flower, which is nocturnal, opens for two nights in a row and gives off the smell of acetone, attracting pollinating beetles. These insects are trapped when it closes during the day and, the following night, they fly out full of pollen to visit new flowers, enabling fertilization. After the second night, the fertilized flower withers and the peduncle – the “stem” of the flower – inverts for fruiting in the water. Thus, the seeds are spread through the water and germinate submerged. Its name means “water dweller with pointed petals”. […] To germinate, it needs lightly running water and clayey and fertile soils.
