NAME:
Soil and vegetation play a fundamental role in controlling rainfall and balancing the hydrological cycle. Part of the water that infiltrates the soil is slowly transferred to the rivers, keeping them always full on their way to the sea. The other part is absorbed by plants, which transfer it directly to the atmosphere. Studies carried out in the Amazon by the “Amazon Research Institute (Inpa) reveal that more than half of the water returned to the atmosphere is transferred by the transpiration of the leaves.
It is easy to imagine the importance of this process, considering that the sum of the surfaces of the numerous leaves of a tree is immensely greater than the surface of the soil occupied by that same tree. Therefore, every time trees are cut down in a forest, the clearing formed, even when occupied by a dam, will transfer much less water vapor into the atmosphere.
