A wise man once went to the docks to watch ships go in and out of the harbor. One noticed that when the ship went out to sea, all the people on the dock were celebrating and wishing they had a good voyage. Meanwhile, another ship entered the harbor and docked. It was generally ignored by the crowd.
The sage addressed the people, saying: “You are looking at things upside down! When a ship leaves, you don't know what's ahead, or what the end of it will be. So there's really no reason to celebrate. But when a ship enters the port and arrives home safely, this is a reason to make them feel joy.”
Life is that journey and we are the ship. When a child is born, we celebrate. When a soul comes home, we mourn. But if we saw life on earth the way the sage saw the ship, perhaps we could say, “The ship ended its journey, weathered the storms of life, and finally entered the harbor. And now he's safe at home...
