Born in Rio de Janeiro and graduated in Medicine in Switzerland, Adolpho Lutz discovered a new disease: South American blastomycosis, now known as paracoccidioidomycosis, a lung disease caused by a fungus.
Lutz began his professional career in the interior of São Paulo. In 1889 he traveled to Hawaii to study a leprosy epidemic. Back in Brazil, he took over the direction of the Bacteriological Institute of São Paulo, the first of its kind in South America and which today bears his name. In 1908, he joined the Instituto de Manguinhos, where he worked for 32 years.
Lutz has published numerous works on typhoid fever, malaria, schistosomiasis, diphtheria, leishmaniasis, leprosy, mycoses, among others. He also developed important research in entomology. His death occurred in 1940.
