NAME:
Take the focus off you. When listening to an outburst, avoid responding with a situation you experienced. Be careful not to devalue the other's pain and not to use your speech as a springboard to vent as well.
Do not interrupt. Out of impatience or even excessive excitement, we tend to talk over the top or complete the interlocutor's sentences. Listen to the end and avoid giving the last word: you can leave the impression that you want to be right.
Do not provide solutions. Instead of finding a way out, just try to be there. Most of the time, people need more of a shoulder to lean on than an answer to their problem.
