What seemed to be something harmless and for educational purposes created chaos at the Paraná Department of Education. A financial education support material for 6th grade classes, prepared by a teacher, caused a lot of controversy because of its content.
Rich mentality Poor mentality
The content of the material addresses the issue of how people with rich and poor mentality tend to see the world. Basically, they are antagonistic characteristics that, in the view of the material, justify the financial condition of an individual. Check the document:
As you can see, the table assigns negative behaviors to people with a poor mentality and positive ones to those with a rich mentality.
Criticism of the material
Although the intention was to educate children, the path actually took another direction. The first complaints came from the teachers' union in Paraná, where accusations of “glorification of money” and “stigmatization of poverty” were made. In addition, the union stated that the material does not take into account the reality of students in the public school system.
When the document appeared on the internet, it was no different. Several netizens criticized the material claiming that it influences poor children to blame their parents for being in this financial situation.
material removal
With all this situation, the Secretary of Education of Paraná announced the removal of the content of the discipline in their education networks. Incidentally, the entity insisted on highlighting the origin of the document, developed by a professor, emphasizing the autonomy that professors have regarding the construction of support materials.
In addition, the Secretariat communicated that the content does not converge with its teaching methodology, since it goes against its ideals of non-judgment and non-segregation of people.
