As in the book, the high point of the narrative is his life with Barack Obama at White House, between 2009 and 2017. The original title is Becoming, which refers to the transformation. After all, that's what the documentary is about: Michelle's transformation.
From the images to the soundtrack, the documentary is full of emotions. Michelle raises two important flags: female emancipation and the fight against racial inequality. The daughter of a working-class family in Chicago, she tells how she reached the position of resident of the White House.
In one of the main scenes of the film, the former first lady questions and rejects the idea of America postracial. Brilliantly, it lists the names of innocent young black men killed in police actions and discusses the fear that Americans had in having a black family in charge of the country. At all times, it makes clear its origins and the existence of strong structural racism in the country.
It is in this context that the documentary arrives at the streaming. The world's admiration for the Obama family is mainly in its normality. “As my mother used to say, they are not special. There are millions of people in the world like Michelle and Barack,” says Michelle in one of the scenes.
