No sooner said than done. I even wrote invitations, in neat handwriting, on cards with colorful vignettes of my own making, and handed them over to the classmates, at school, a few days before the event, embarrassed and happy with the kind receptivity of the guests.
When the day came, it was a Saturday, a day without classes at the American School, I prepared everything, decorated the room, I “dressed up” myself with the first dress and the first pair of new shoes since we arrived in São Paul.
In short, the sad and endless afternoon came to an end, and night fell, without a single one of my guests, not a single one! Frustration, disappointment, rejection – these were my companions on that ill-fated twelfth birthday.
This was one of the great traumas of my transition from my first year in Brazil, at Rua Jaguaribe. Fortunately, it was also one of the last, if not the last, of such an impact.
