NAME:

Read the opening excerpt of the text “Memória de Livros”, written by João Ubaldo Ribeiro:

Aracaju, the city where we lived in the late 1940s, early 1950s, was the proud capital of Sergipe, the smallest Brazilian state (about the size of Switzerland). This distinction, however, did not detract from its character as a small, provincial and calm town, at the mouth of a river and a short distance from very beautiful beaches. We knew about the world through the radio, through newsreels that accompanied all the films and through national magazines. Television was seen by many as a traveller's lie, only a few crazy people traveled by plane, we bought live chickens and vegetables brought to our door on the backs of mules, we had big yards and gardens, boys didn't argue with adults, women didn't use long pants didn't even drive cars and we lived so far away from everything it was said that when the world ended, we'd only know about five days later.
