The tamarind is a massive, slow-growing and long-lived tree, which under favorable conditions can reach a height of 30 meters, a crown of 12 meters in diameter and a trunk circumference of 7.5 meters. It is highly resistant to wind. It has strong, flexible and large branches, drooping at the ends. Its bark is dark gray, rough and cracked. The leaves are light green in color, composed, pinnate, alternate, glabrous, consisting of 10 to 20 pairs of opposite oblong leaflets, 1.25 to 2.5 cm long and 5 to 6 mm wide, which fold to the night.
