The profession of saddler is nicknamed Espedito thanks to the family tradition: he learned the trade from his father, who learned from his father, the first of the Saddlers in the Cariri region. It so happens, however, that cowboys began to become rarer in the Ceará backlands, and saddles, jerkins and riding instruments became a thing of the past. For decades, Espedito Seleiro, baptized by Espedito Velozo de Carvalho, tried to reinvent the art of leather. He realized that women were voracious consumers of sandals and that the combinations of arabesques and colors were not exhausted: “The smartest people call it design, I say colored drawing”.
The style of the shapes he draws on the leather renews the cangaço aesthetic and the northeastern identity. “I was inspired by former customers, drovers, cowboys and gypsies,” he says. Today, with a production line in tiny Nova Olinda, 500 kilometers from Fortaleza, he assures: “Even when I do something similar, I make a difference”. A real tourist spot in the city, the workshop works with the same leather cutting machine that belonged to Espedito's father, Raimundo Seleiro. “If the machine spoke, it told the story much better than me”, jokes the artisan. The six fourth generation Saddlers also work in the store-studio, which is open from seven in the morning.
There are still some pieces of doublet, rug and riding there, but the flagship is actually sandals – model Maria Bonita (female) or model Lampião (male) –, as well as wallets and purses. In a mural on the wall, photos and clippings from magazines show how far country shoes have gone. People like the presenter Regina Casé and the filmmaker Guel Arraes poses with the sertão on their feet. The pieces appear in Cavalera's fashion show, at São Paulo Fashion Week in 2004, and in films such as 2 Filhos de Francisco, in 2005. “I think if my grandfather and father saw what we did they wouldn't believe it”, concludes Espedito.
