A huge green heart in the middle of the city. This is the image for those who see from above the botanical garden of the capital of Paraíba, known as Mata do Buraquinho. Located near the city center, in the geological formation of the Lower Plateau Costeiro, it is one of the main remnants of Atlantic forest in Paraíba. It is crossed by the Jaguaribe River, which, when dammed, forms the Buraquinho Dam, responsible for part of João Pessoa's water supply.
Its efforts are focused on the conservation of the Atlantic Forest in the Northeast. Coordinates and conducts research and environmental education actions and programs, develops and maintains collections documents of plants from the Atlantic forest and other botanical specimens appropriate to the climatic zone of the region.
Its phytological composition is formed by a floristic complex, in which there is a participation of elements not only from the Atlantic Forest, but also species from the Amazonian flora and Hiléia Baiana. Representatives of Brazilian fauna also inhabit the site, mainly birds and insects. Among mammals, sloths, marmosets, agouti, foxes and bats stand out. In the reptile group, snakes and lizards have considerable variety.
It has an administrative building, a visitor center, an exhibition hall and a house where the botany laboratory, the environmental education center and the library, in addition to a center touristic.
