NAME:

My grandfather

Grandfather must never be serious. You shouldn't keep talking about hunger, misery, headaches, rent arrears or bills to pay. And not forcing us to brush our teeth all the time or go to bed early. This is a father thing. Grandpa must always stay out of it, in another world, with less real and more interesting stories. The grandfather is neither strong nor powerful like the father. He's even weak sometimes. Need help sometimes. When he crosses a street holding hands with us, he is helping and being helped too. Grandpa needs a lot of care, like us.

The good grandfather is the one who went to all the wars, fighting against everything and everyone, and returned in one piece to our arms. Grandfather's rich and playful imagination offers the most varied knowledge of geography, natural sciences, stories of all peoples, and the wonders of the animal, vegetable and inventive kingdoms.
Grandpa Zé Domingos do Caititu was like that. When we sat at night on the stone slab at Fazenda Caititu, the sky had more stars and there was not so much evil in the world. My grandmother Maria Augusta brought coffee with cassava and blankets for us to protect ourselves from the calm. After having breakfast, my grandfather would open the book of the cachola. The book was the imagination, as Grandpa had no reading.
My grandfather was a man of many stories. When I started, I only stopped when it was time to carry my grandchildren to bed. A story soon led to another, which led to another, which led to so many. I liked life, people and things.
