A passionate and vibrant doctor with a strong personality. That was Carlos Chagas, the researcher who unraveled the disease that bears his name, Chagas Disease, at the beginning of the last century.
He started by studying malaria and made several discoveries about this disease, transmitted by a mosquito. And it was precisely by studying malaria that he began to observe the symptoms of Chagas Disease, which was still unknown at the time.
It was like this: Carlos Chagas was in Minas Gerais, on the banks of the São Francisco River, researching malaria when he began to observe that people were dying of a strange disease. He discovered damage to the heart muscle of these dead and was intrigued. And a few days later, locals showed him an insect that sucked blood from people's faces. They called the insect a hovel, hickey, or barber.
Curious as he was, Carlos Chagas began to examine the insect and discovered coincidences with people's deaths. He discovered a protozoan in the barbershop, which he named Trypanosoma cruzi, in honor of the physician Oswaldo Cruz. Putting pieces together here and there, he discovered the new disease, which he named American trypanosomiasis, but it actually became known as Chagas disease.
The discovery took place in 1909. He spent the rest of his life studying this and other illnesses like the Spanish flu. He made a revolution in public health in Brazil when he worked in the government of President Epitácio Pessoa. He worked hard on various researches until he died at age 55 of a heart attack.
