Cruls Mission: defining the location of Brazil's new capital

Brasília was inaugurated on April 21, 1960. But did you know that decades earlier there was already a group of people in charge of defining the exact location of the new capital? It was Mission Cruls.

Mission Cruls was created in the Federal Constitution of 1891. His task was to carry out a scientific study of the Midwest and define the area that would house the new capital.

The following year, 1982, President Floriano Peixoto instituted the Exploratory Commission of the Central Plateau. The group was headed by the Belgian astronomer and geographer Louis Ferdinand Cruls, who gave the Mission its name. The team included researchers, geologists, geographers, botanists, naturalists, engineers and doctors, among others.
