Always considered an indicator of wealth, it is said that in the year 80, in the marriage of Harum-Al-Rachid, 40 tons of sugar were consumed. Its diffusion around the world happened thanks to the Egyptians and Arabs, but Europe will only know it at the end of the Middle Ages, due to the Crusades. Brazil received the first seedlings around 1515, coming from Madeira Island, and had its first mill in 1532, in São Tomé (São Paulo), with manual equipment. In the following century, it was already the largest producer and supplier in the world, remaining so until the end of the 17th century, when it lost its leadership.
