The audiobook market has proven to be increasingly lucrative, after all it is much easier to fit into your routine listening to an audiobook, even because it is possible to listen to it while doing other things, which is different from reading which requires stopping other activities to be done. And it is in this scenario that the market presents itself with the intention of reaching a value of U$20 Billion by the year 2028.
With an ever-increasing market value, the eyes of
apple turned to the production of an audiobook, which will have an artificial intelligence narrating it. This attitude caused several controversies in the community that consumes audiobooks. How would it work?
The audiobooks would be narrated by digital voices based on real narrators, with all funding coming from Apple and the writers still earn royalties from sales. However, not all booksellers agreed with the terms of the proposal.
Opinions presented
With the launch of the proposal, a series of problems were presented, such as, for example, the reduction of jobs in the industry with an audiobook of inferior quality. After all, the presence of a human narrator carries a series of emotions and personality, fundamental for audiobook lovers.
The co-producer of Canada's largest audiobook producer, David Caron, spoke out against Apple's innovation. "The narrator brings a whole new range of artistry to audiobook creation, and we believe that's a powerful thing."
Mark Piesing, from The Bookseller, has an opposite opinion to Caron. He believes that the arrival of Artificial Intelligence in the market is inevitable, after all the human narrator fails and several times it ends up having to go back to correct it. This results in a lot of time and money being wasted. He even argues that Artificial Intelligence can easily learn anything, including imitating emotions, which would bring him closer to a real narrator.
possible solution
There is a solution capable of pleasing both opinions, which is to keep both models. A premium edition with a real narrator, as it takes more time and cost to produce, and another with artificial intelligence, a more commercial and cheaper edition.
