Irerê has this name because, when he chirps, it seems he is saying i-re-rê. But it is also called piadeira, teal and widow teal, as it belongs to the teal family. And, like all teals, the irerê likes to swim, live in flocks and nest in the middle of the aquatic vegetation.
The funny thing about irerê is that he can be tamed, behaving like a puppy: he likes to pat his head, roam free in the backyard and go straight after his owner. And it serves as a guard dog too – when a stranger arrives at the house, he shouts: Irreê! Irreê! Irreê!
