NAME:

trees in the yard

Back in the backyard, when today's children weren't even born, the world was very beautiful. Everywhere there were many trees, flowers and birds and butterflies of all colors. I used to live at Joãozinho's house and every day his friends came to play with me: they hugged my trunk and went up my branches until close to the sky. When tired, they ran down, laughing and talking loudly: "The last one to get down there is the priest's wife!" And I had to be very careful not to drop any of them on me. Already sleepy from playing and with a very full belly, they looked for my shadow, leaned back on my throne and slept a lot until the sun went down. We lived quite happily, until a big man, named Serjão, appeared in town, fat as a whale, with a mustache and a deep voice that was frightening. Serjão started to buy everything; he killed trees, destroyed houses. Finally, he covered the entire land with cement and built twenty-story buildings instead. Our world was getting ugly. The children had almost no more places to play marbles, no trees to climb, no land to play in,

And it so happened that Joãozinho's father had to sell the house. Serjão went to the backyard and had everything knocked down: “Today, the house. Tomorrow, the tree”. The whale revolted me. Ah… I feel like giving him an antler. Men are fools. They think that trees are just for decorating. But we understand everything. We don't have a nose, but we breathe. We don't have a heart, but we feel. We don't have tears, but we cry a lot when we are mistreated. I don't know why men think they're better than us. They fight for just about anything… Just because one is white and the other black, it's a reason for a beating. We trees never fight. Even if one is a mango tree and the other an orange tree. We are always friends. It doesn't matter what seed we're born from.
