______________________ do the stars blink?

by Juliana Miranda

We often have the impression that we see the stars twinkling in the sky. In reality, the stars do not blink, but only create an optical illusion that makes us believe they are blinking.

The images we see of the stars seem to blink ______________________ in the bright light of these celestial bodies traverses more than 100 kilometers into Earth's atmosphere before reaching ours eyes. Along this path, the rays of light suffer effects from the air, a fact that gives us the feeling that the stars are changing their luminosity.

The action of the atmosphere on starlight creates a false flashing effect. This same impression does not happen with the planets visible to the naked eye, such as Mercury, Venus, Mars and Jupiter, because the images of the planets do not suffer the distortion caused by the air.
