The highest degree of sports competition is the Olympics, which take place every four years.
In 2004, this great event was held in the Greek city of Athens. And why is this interesting? Because Greece is the cradle of games. In the Ancient Age, around 776 BC, the Greek city-states gathered to compete, always in the village of Olympia.
During the Olympics, people even made peace, giving wars a truce. One of the purposes of the games was to honor Zeus, the greatest deity on Olympus. The victories in competitions rendered honors and glories to athletes and cities. However, with the Roman invasion, the games fell into decay and, in 394 after Christ, they were no longer played. Thus, the Olympic celebration went without being held for 1500 years!
And it was only in 1894, thanks to the efforts of the French sportsman Baron Pierre de Coubertin, that the idea of holding an international sports competition was taken up again. To organize the Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was created in the same year. In 1896, the first edition of the games of the Modern Era was in Athens.
