release the thrush

Francisco was born in Portugal, in the 17th century, and came to Brazil at the age of thirteen to visit his uncle Gaspar's farm, which was in São Paulo. Arriving here, “an entirely new life began for Francis”. For a start, the customs were completely different. People slept in a hammock, ate manioc, sailed in canoes, fished with bows and arrows. Not to mention the vegetation, which was dense and closed, full of animals: snakes, parrots, jaguars, coatis, pacas, armadillos.

One day Francisco was invited by the pioneer Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva, known as Anhanguera, to go with him to the sertão. What an adventure! He had to take a garrucha (a firearm) to safely penetrate the interior of Brazil at that time.

But not everything was a party. The way in which the Indians and blacks were treated by the Portuguese made Francisco upset…

Based on extensive documentation, this historical children's novel is an unparalleled introduction to colonial Brazil. For better or for worse, it places the reader inside the reality of the country in its second century of existence - with the privilege of being led there by the tasty writing of Ruth Rocha.
