In the past, it was common in the humid forests on the slopes of Chapada do Araripe. Discovered only in 1996, the little soldier of Araripe is the Brazilian bird most threatened with extinction. It is believed that today there are fewer than 800 individuals in the wild.
Considered the guardian of the waters because it reproduces only near the springs, it is an endemic bird (exclusive) from Ceará, found only in small stretches of forest in Barbalho, Crato and Missão Velha, in the Cariri valley, a true oasis in the middle of the caatinga. The main threat to the little soldier in Araripe is habitat destruction, caused by deforestation and watershed degradation.
The little soldier of Araripe is a bird with about 15 cm in length and about 20 grams in weight. It presents great sexual dimorphism, that is, the female is very different from the male. She is olive green. The male, on the other hand, is white with a black tail and flight feathers, part of the back is red, as well as a showy red forelock. Young birds are the same color as females.
Its popular name is due to its similarity to another Brazilian bird of the same genus, the little soldier. Both have a striking forelock, similar to a Roman helmet. The tuft increases as the male develops. Already your scientific name, Antilophia bokermanni is a tribute to Brazilian zoologist Werner Bokermann. belongs to the family Pripidae.
Territorialist, the little soldier from Araripe protects his area from invaders. This defense capacity, its exuberant plumage and agility in acrobatics are essential to attract the female. The male remains with a single partner for the reproductive period.
The female, which lays two eggs at each laying, builds the nest on a fork, usually low (less than 2m), over rivers and other waterways. Puppies remain with their parents for almost two years, time necessary for them to become adults and for the males to develop their permanent feathers, until they are expelled from the paternal territory.
Although it also eats insects and other small arthropods, the Araripe toy feeds mainly on small fruits, defecating seeds mixed with faeces, playing an important role in dispersing plants along watercourses.
