Good news for college students. There will be a minimum increase of 40% for university scholarships offered by Capes (Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel) in 2023. This decision was taken on Friday (9th) at a meeting of the Lula government's education group. Through this increase, university scholarships can reach up to R$3,080.00.

Currently, the number of Brazilian students doing master's, doctorate, residency pedagogical and post-doctorates reach close to 200,000 and all of them benefit from university scholarships offered by Capes.
However, despite the benefit being of great help to all these people, there has not been a readjustment of the value since 2013. Even after the decree of the current president Jair Bolsonaro, the students benefited by Capes, stopped receiving the amount of the university scholarship.
Currently, a master's student receives R$1,500, while a doctorate degree receives R$2,200, if we take into account the minimum increase of 40%, scholarships can reach up to R$2,100.00 and R$3,080.00, respectively.
The president of the National Association of Graduate Students (ANPG), Rogean Vinícius Santos Soares, stated that this increase in the value of university scholarships would be a “relief”, although the delay in the value of paid scholarships is estimated by 75%.
“If there is a readjustment, it will already be an achievement, but we will continue asking for an annual increase mechanism. We know that next year's budget will be difficult”, says Rogean.
According to Estadão's investigation, the transition team hopes that the resources directed towards increasing the value of scholarships universities, come from the fiscal space, which can be opened by the PEC (Proposed Amendment to the Constitution) of the transition.
