Large Brazilian banks, such as Bradesco and Caixa, are the target of malware…
Alert: these are the dangers of paying the minimum on your credit card bill…
The change will take place at the request of Brazil's four main banking organizations: Bradesco, Banco do Brasil, Itaú and Santander. According to some information, the new measure comes into force on April 1, 2023.
The relationship with prepaid cards is due to the increase in the use of the modality, which ended up attracting the attention of financial institutions that seek to reach a break-even status with the charges derived from the exchange. This function works differently with digital banks, as they want to keep fees as they are in order not to lose their current revenue. There was great pressure from the four largest banks in the country for the change to be made. This so that it was possible to equalize the dispute between all companies.
Currently, the situation works as follows: card issuers charge something between 0.5% and 0.8% of the amount for debit purchases. With regard to prepaid cards, there is no consensus on the amount charged, so some companies may charge up to 1% of the value of purchases.
This pressure demands that a regulation be made on how much can be withdrawn so that there is not a greater charge from some and that only one institution is harmed. In a note, Branco Central reported the following:
“The measures aim to increase the efficiency of the payments ecosystem, encourage the use of cheaper payment instruments, enabling the reduction of acceptance costs of these cards to commercial establishments, in addition to enabling reductions in the cost of products to final consumers, in order to provide benefits for the entire society."
What has been noticed in recent years is a growing use of cards, according to a report carried out by the Brazilian Association of Credit Card and Services Companies, known as Abecs.
Payments made with credit and debit cards present a current growth of 3605% in the first half of 2022 compared to the first half of 2021. According to data, around R$ 1.6 trillion were transacted with cards from January to June.
