Can you solve this equation by moving a single toothpick?

As we learn and practice doing math, they get easier and easier to solve. Even with the level of difficulty increasing at each stage, mathematics is an incredible universe that stimulates our learning more and more.

A very effective way to test math skills is to participate in challenges involving math and logical reasoning, where it is possible to challenge yourself to the maximum and promote a better development of these skills.

In this sense, we propose a math challenge very interesting for you.

Move just one toothpick and correct the equation

The situation present in the challenge is quite simple to understand, but the resolution may not be as easy as it seems.

The scenario is as follows: there is an equation that states that 4 – 5 = 6, but we know that this is an error. Therefore, we need you to transform the equation into a true equation, by shifting only one of the 18 matchsticks present in the image.

Check out the challenge image:

Math challenge.

It's important to remember that you can think of several possibilities for correcting the equation as long as they all make sense and move only one toothpick.

An example: is it possible to transform 4 – 5 = 1 by moving just one toothpick? Clearly, there would be no way to turn the number 6 into 1, as it would be necessary to move 4 matchsticks

Did you manage to find the solution? Don't worry, you shouldn't consider yourself any less intelligent for this. Usually, the obvious answers go unnoticed because we always think that the solution is well hidden and that it would not be that simple. Now, let's get to the answer!

Solution

Of the shapes you thought of, only one fits the required proposal. Check the solution:

Math challenge.

Moving just one toothpick from the equation, we turned 4 into 11 and in the end we got the equation 11 – 5 = 6, which is 100% correct. Challenges like this become easier and easier with practice. So if you failed to accomplish the challenge, don't be sad, just practice more.
