After the change in legislation, which took place in 2020, grandchildren will be able to acquire nationality directly. That is, it is no longer necessary for parents to have the prior right or proof of bond with the country, such as opening bank accounts, creating the NIF (similar to the CPF) and frequent visits to the country.
For those who have been married in a stable union for three years, it is possible to apply for citizenship if the bond is recognized on Portuguese soil. In addition, you can also apply for citizenship for the spouse whose marriage certificate was transcribed at a Portuguese consulate.
In the case of great-grandchildren, one of the grandparents or parents must apply for citizenship. This is because the right only extends to the third generation. Only in this way will it be possible to start the process.
In addition to this change, the process should move to digital soon. However, currently the application is made by sending the required documents, in the physical version, via Post Office, and going to the Portuguese Consulate on Brazilian soil. To finalize the procedures, there is usually the practice of going to the country to carry out the requests already on Portuguese soil.
