The Turnspit, from the United Kingdom, is the most remembered breed among the extinct ones. With short legs and a long body, they emerged in the 16th century in England as “functional dogs”. It took that name because, according to history, this breed was created to run on a wheel and was used in kitchens, as if they were hamsters, to be able to turn meat and vegetables on a roller. This was common practice until the 19th century.
Its extinction probably occurred after animal rights organizations put an end to its forced labor. In addition, technological innovations have significantly contributed to dogs no longer needing to work that way. Soon, the breed was crossed with others until its characteristics were lost.
This breed of medium size and coat lived in Polynesia and New Zealand. The Kuri breed was known for dogs that made excellent companions and lived with the Maori people until the 19th century. However, scientists believe that they disappeared soon after the arrival of the European invaders, who crossed between the European races and the Kuris, creating derivations. However, it is still possible to find stuffed specimens of the breed in museums in Oceania and Europe.
The Cuban dogo emerged after crossing the Mastiff and Bulldog breeds and became extinct due to its loss of function. Their job was to terrorize enslaved people and hunt runaway slaves for plantation owners. However, little by little the race was mixed and became extinct.
