With the increase in inflation, Brazilians ended up losing purchasing power in many sectors, even food. Faced with this scenario, some consumers ended up defaulting because they were unable to pay the amount spent on the most basic. The data found by Boa Vista, a financial intelligence and credit analysis company, show that the percentage of those who were in the red for food reaches 18%.

The same survey showed that the expenses that most led consumers to default were those with miscellaneous accounts, such as those referring to education, taxes, health and leisure. Everything comes to a percentage of 23%. Food expenses are second, but at the highest rate since the 2017 surveys.
Another expense that has led Brazilians to get a bad name in the square is the personal loan, as it has been seen that it is responsible for 15% of the current total of people with overdue debts. Although the number seems high, it is lower than that found in the second half of last year, which was 17%.
Almost 30% of respondents relate the moment they are to the fact that they are unemployed. This justification increased, especially compared to 2021, as the rate had reached a maximum of 27% in the second half. Already 24% of the participants answered that they are in arrears with the debts because of the decrease in the size of the income, something that also increased since last year.
According to IBGE economist Flavio Calife, “unemployment is historically the main cause of negative and continues as such, despite the fact that rates have been decreasing in recent months, according to the IBGE”.
Among survey respondents who admitted to having been in this position for some time, 63% said they had three or more late payment accounts. Most over 90 in arrears. For 56% of Brazilians in the red, debts exceed R$ 3 thousand. 12 months ago, this percentage was 51%.
