According to what was published, all this amount of food lost will correspond to approximately US$ 1.5 trillion, while we have more than 840 million people in a situation of hunger. This survey also shows that companies, governments and NGOs are the main factors when it comes to combating this situation.
Following this line of thought, BCG tried to understand what has caused this loss and also the waste of food. The company even managed to identify ways to reverse these problems, which end up involving factors such as supply ramifications, public and private collaboration, regulation and also awareness of people.
According to the study, it is estimated that one third of the food on the planet has been wasted or even lost year after year. This waste or loss happens when food is not used for consumption. The study also pointed out that the main problem in low- and middle-income countries is food loss, that is, food cannot even leave the production and transport stages. For countries with the highest incomes, waste among retail players and consumers has been the biggest problem.
Here in our country, for example, about 3% of all fish caught in the Amazon are destined for garbage due to precarious transport conditions. According to information collected by the global humanitarian organization Action Against Hunger, “small farmers, ranchers and fishermen manage to produce about 70% of the global food supply”, which means that these sources of waste are quite varied.
