Telegraph Operator's Day - May 24

In 2020, the 21st century, the time of instant communication, it is difficult to imagine what the telegraph and the telegraph operator, the professional who operated this device, represented to the world for decades. Next Sunday (24), Telegraph Operator's Day is celebrated, instituted in 1944 by then president Getúlio Vargas, who considered this professional a true anonymous hero, for the relevant services rendered to the collectivity.

The date was chosen because a hundred years earlier, in 1844, there was the first transmission of a message by telegraph in the world. The event, which took place in the USA, inaugurated the telegraph line between the cities of Washington and Baltimore. Although simple, the message was “What hath God wrought!”, which in Portuguese means “What God wrought made it possible!”, expressing how the world was amazed at the technological advances that arose.

To give you an idea, the telegraph was the first technology that allowed the transmission of data in a instant, being also the first communication tool to employ electrical signals for this goal. The professional responsible for sending and receiving the messages needed to have unique knowledge in deciphering the codes used to transmit the information. In this system, each letter of the alphabet and number is represented by a specific combination of dots and dashes.

Words form according to the correct combination of these symbols. Messages were transmitted by means of and intervals of sound (whistle) or light (lantern). To work in the area, the telegraph operator needed to know the famous Morse code, a language system created by the American Samuel Morse, in 1835.

In Brazil, the telegraph was installed by order of D. Peter II. The first transmission took place in May 1852, in Rio de Janeiro, between the Army Headquarters and Quinta da Boa Vista, the imperial palace. […]
