Can a 57-year-old retire? Find out what the new rule says

Have you just turned 57 or are you about to turn 57 in the next few years? We know you're looking forward to retirement, don't we? At this age, it is already possible to enter the process, but it is necessary to be aware of what the new rule says on the subject.

Before, it is good to remember that men and women have different ages and conditions to retire. And, according to the current statute that governs social security in Brazil, women can retire earlier.

But calm down, man: your time will come too.

Can a 57-year-old retire?

A Social Security Reform approved in 2019 brought new rules to Brazilian retirement. Now, they follow these rules:

• Men: 35 years of contribution and be at least 62 years old and 6 months old;
• Women: 30 years of contribution and be at least 57 years and 6 months old.

Therefore, if you are a woman over 57 years of age, you can now start your retirement.

Retirement by age

As previously told to men, their time will come. There is even a rule that can help you retire early.

Still according to the Social Security Reform, you can retire by age, even if you haven't contributed the necessary 30 or 35 years. It is enough to have contributed 15.

• Men: 15 years of contribution and 65 years and 6 months old;
• Women: 15 years of contribution and 61 years and 6 months old.

In addition, if you have a specific condition or if your work is high risk, you can apply for your retirement earlier. And it is very likely that you will be able to retire at 57 years old.

How to apply for retirement online?

If you are 57 years old or older and meet all the above requirements, you can retire online in just a few clicks. The first step is to enter the Federal Government's Meu INSS website by clicking here.

It is also possible to do everything through the My INSS application. Just download it from the App Store or Google Play. Don't worry, the step by step is the same.

Log in to the platform and, with everything ready, just follow the next steps.

1. Click on the “New Order” button;
2. Enter the name of the desired service/benefit;
3. In the list, click on the desired service/benefit;
4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

You must have the following documents at hand, as photos of them will eventually be requested:

• CPF number

In cases of attorney or legal representative:

• Power of attorney or term of legal representation (such as guardianship, guardianship or term of custody);
• Identification document with photo of the attorney or representative (RG, CNH or CTPS are accepted);
• CPF of the attorney or representative.

To follow your process, follow these steps:

1. Enter My INSS;
2. On the home page, click on the button “Check Orders”;
3. Find your process and click on “Detail”.

The Federal Government has up to 45 days to give you a response.
