What is PCD?

PCD is an acronym that means Disabled Person, referring to individuals with permanent limitations, whether physical, intellectual, auditory or visual.

Before, people with these conditions were called “disabled people”, but the term has fallen into disuse. This from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in 2006.

What is each washing machine symbol for?

According to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), about 24% of the Brazilian population is PCD.

Worldwide, according to the United Nations (UN) this index reaches 10%, the majority being people with intellectual disability (5%).

In second place is physical disability (2%), followed by auditory (1.3%), multiple (1%) and visual (0,7%).

types of disability

Understand now the different types of disability:

physical disability

Physical disability refers to people who have mobility difficulties, whether natural or acquired.

The main types of physical disability are:

  • Quadriplegia (paralysis and loss of upper and lower movement)
  • Paraplegia (paralysis of the lower body)
  • Cerebral palsy (injury or malformation of the brain)
  • Dwarfism (growth failure)
  • Amputation (loss or missing limb)
  • Congenital malformation (deficiency in organ formation)

Visual impairment

When the person has limitations in vision, whether partial or total. The most common types are:

  • Low vision (still retains visual ability, but there is at least 30% loss in the eye)
  • Monocular vision (when blindness affects only one eye)
  • Blindness (complete or partial loss of vision, compromising all ability to read or write)

intellectual disability

In this case, the person has impairment or loss of intellectual capacity. Intellectual disability has different degrees. Some types are:

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (autism)
  • Syndrome of Williams
  • fragile X syndrome
  • Syndrome of Asperger's
  • Syndrome of angelman
  • Syndrome of Down
  • Syndrome of tourette

Hearing deficiency

It consists of partial or total loss of hearing ability. The types are:

  • Bilateral (hearing loss in both ears)
  • Unilateral (hearing loss in only one ear)
