This past Thursday, the 6th, the president of Brazil, Luís Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), spoke about the imbroglio of the implementation of the New Secondary School. On the previous day, the Ministry of Education (MEC) he decided to suspend the move for 60 days.
As published by the G1 website, Lula said that the idea is not to revoke the program. “We have suspended and are going to discuss with all the entities that are interested in discussing how to improve Secondary Education in this country”, said the president.

However, still according to the publication, in practice the suspension does not change the daily life of schools. This means that educational institutions must continue to follow the New High School guidelines.
Lula pointed out, at breakfast with journalists at the Planalto Palace, that the current Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, is complying with a decision that comes from the transition period of the government. At the time, between November and December of last year, a commission analyzed the entire area of education in Brazil.
According to the petista, the idea is to reach an agreement. “We are going to suspend [the implementation of the New Secondary School] for a period, until we reach an agreement that leaves everyone satisfied”, he underlined.
Last Tuesday, April 4, Santana had pointed out that the New Secondary School did not go through extensive discussion and that the previous government was “missing” on the subject.
The new teaching model began to be aired in 2017, with a proposal by the then President of the Republic, Michel Temer (MDB). However, it was only in the Bolsonaro government (PL), in 2021, that an ordinance for change was published.
If approved, the new teaching model should be applied in all schools in the country, both public and private. The project foresees an increase in the workload – reaching 3,000 class hours throughout the year. High school, being 2,400 hours in the previous model.
However, the biggest difference is in the content offer. All disciplines would be grouped into areas of knowledge – just like in the National Secondary Education Exam (Enem): languages, mathematics, natural sciences and human sciences.
In addition, students would be free to “set up” their workload as they wished, focused on what they would like to pursue as a career. For example, a student who wants to study medicine at the university could prioritize science classes in nature and reduce studies in human sciences.
