With the transition to the management of President Lula (PT), his ministers began to delimit the new steps of their ministries. In an interview with Estadão, the new Minister of Education, Camilo Santana, gave his opinion on what he believes should be a priority in Brazilian schools and defended the integral education for all series.
“We are going to define planning, which starts with high school [schooling], in the last grades of fundamental [schooling], the most delicate years for young people”, he underlined.

Santana also informed that the Ministry of Education (MEC) wants to present a plan on the matter for the next hundred days. “Nothing can be done without planning”, he said, when asked about the costs – significantly higher – of this type of workload in schools.
Finally, the minister said that the final decision will be up to President Lula.
Camilo Santana defended changes in the Brazilian school curriculum. According to him, there should be more appreciation of themes such as democracy, citizenship and ethics.
“When mathematics is discussed, the importance of freedom of expression, criticism, thought and democracy is discussed”.
He also advocated that students should discuss more politics in the classroom. However, he reinforced that it is not about partisan politics, but about issues that any citizen experiences in their daily lives.
“I'm one who argues that everything in life is a matter of politics,” he said. “Who defines the minimum wage it's politics. [It] needs to be discussed in schools, unions, bars and condominiums”, he concluded.
The new minister at the head of the MEC did not make it clear whether he would immediately close the civic-military schools. However, he said he requested a study of the results of the program, to assess the situation in a broader context.
However, regarding the already extinct National Policy for Literacy (PNA), Camilo Santana stressed that the program “does not have indicators and has received several complaints”.
