Entrepreneurs from the state of Minas Gerais recently announced that they will start an industry focused on the production of mosquitoes Aedes Aegypt modified which will have the function of controlling the epidemic of arboviruses that has been installed in the state. They say that construction will begin next week.
A biofactory unit will be built entirely to control arboviruses caused by mosquitoes, such as zika, dengue and chikungunya. It is worth mentioning that this construction is foreseen in court by the agreement reached with the company Vale, responsible for the rupture of the Mina do Córrego Feijão dam, in Brumadinho, in 2019.
“With the biofactory, we will be able to have a significant reduction in the number of cases”, pointed out Governor Romeu Zema, with the announcement of construction. “Probably, this will be the last year here in Minas without us having this powerful weapon ready to use”, concludes the governor.
The completion of construction is scheduled for May 2024.
Governor warns population about mosquito care
The governor takes the opportunity to alert the population of the high number of cases in the state and recalls the responsibility of each one in eliminate possible mosquito outbreaks in their homes, in addition to, of course, allowing health agents to enter their homes to help with the process.
“I remember that the cycle of high incidence does not usually occur in consecutive years, but every three, four years. So, in case of a new bullish phase – if we ever have one – we will have time to be cautious. With the factory in full swing, millions of mosquitoes will be produced and released in the state, helping to contain the spread of transmission, ”he says.
Where will the biofactory emerge?
The factory will be installed on land owned by the government of Minas Gerais, in the western region of the state capital. The construction is expected to cost R$20 million.
The intention is that, in the future, this control through biofactories will be carried out throughout the state.
“The forecast is that the first mosquitoes will already be spread in this region at the end of 2024 and that the next epidemic year will be three years from now”, says the state health secretary.
