Employees with a formal contract who were born in January can now request the birthday withdrawal from the Severance Indemnity Fund (FGTS) until the end of the month.
The model, which is optional, has been active since 2020, allowing the annual withdrawal of part of the balance of any present (current job) or past (previous jobs) account of the fund.

According to Caixa Econômica, around 1.3 million workers will have access to the benefit in January. The total value of withdrawals will be R$ 1.9 billion. However, despite receiving the amount in advance, it is necessary to bear the interest rate, as it is characterized as a loan.
It is possible to request the birthday withdrawal annually, in the worker's birthday month and the modality works as an alternative to the withdrawal for termination of the employment contract.
It is possible to redeem the values up to the last business day of the month following the employee's birthday month. For example: those who were born in January, then must request the withdrawal by the end of January to receive it by the end of March.
In 2020, 9.7 million Brazilians benefited from the FGTS birthday withdrawal, and this number increased to 9.8 million in 2021. There are currently around 88 million accounts linked to the FGTS.
The employee can access the FGTS application (Android or iOS), on the website or on Internet Banking and choose to withdraw the benefit. The amount will go to the informed bank account after 5 business days from the request.
It will also be authorized to apply for any bank loan using the FGTS balance as collateral. In this case, the amount of the FGTS birthday withdrawal will be blocked for transfer to the responsible creditor financial institution. This action, according to the Ministry of Economy, generates a reduction in the cost of the requested bank loan.
