Immigrants and refugees can experience many difficulties when arriving in a new country. Adapting to the culture, the people, the customs and much more is quite complicated, and it all starts with the language. In Rio de Janeiro, however, this part of the population has a free option of Portuguese classes, which can help a lot in adapting.
Thus, the Reference and Assistance Center for Immigrants (CRAI-Rio) has registrations available for free Portuguese classes. The course is aimed at refugees, immigrants and stateless persons. Starting last Wednesday, the 25th, registrations can be made through the program application form.

Classes will be held at the Mercado Popular Leonel de Moura Brizola building, in Gamboa, close to Central do Brasil, on Wednesdays and Saturdays, for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. There will be a responsible child caretaker during the
classes, in case parents have no one to leave their children with and need to take them to the classroom.CRAI-Rio was inaugurated at the beginning of this year, in partnership between the Special Secretariat for Citizenship and the Community Organized Relief Effort (Core Response), a non-governmental organization. In addition to classes, the space is dedicated to supporting refugees, immigrants and stateless people who have recently arrived in Rio de Janeiro.
The center offers education, economic development and social assistance actions, in addition to legal assistance to assist in migratory regularization processes, as well as in the obtaining documentation and social assistance, in order to reduce the vulnerability of this part of the population, thus promoting social integration, including measures such as Portuguese.
“Defending the rights of migrants and refugees who arrive in our country must be a commitment for all of us. In Rio, the CRAI is a space for this support, which in addition to social assistance offers training and integration tools”, highlighted the municipal secretary of Citizenship, Renato Moura.
In addition, the space will have emergency dormitories, thus being able to accommodate refugees, immigrants and stateless people who are in a situation of extreme vulnerability.
