At the end of November this year, the European Commission authorized airlines to start using 5G technology inside planes for all generations of mobile phones. An executive from the European Union assured that the cell phones can be used with all the foreseen functions.
“Since 2008, the Commission's implementing decision has reserved certain frequencies for mobile communications on airplanes, enabling airlines to provide messaging, phone calls and data services to passengers flying in the EU. This update of the Commission's implementation decision on mobile communications on board aircraft paves the way for the widespread deployment of 5G services," said a Commission statement.
Thierry Breton, from the Internal Market Committee, commented on the news:
“5G will enable innovative services for people and growth opportunities for European companies. The sky is no longer the limit when it comes to the possibilities offered by super-fast, high-capacity connectivity.”
The announcement about the new service on aircraft pointed out that the 5G connection will be adapted through the use of a special network equipment, known as a pico-cell, and will be available as a kind of over-the-air Wi-Fi. Thus, users will be able to make calls and send text messages as usual.
Details on how the new technology will be approached have not yet been released, but the deadline is set for June 30, 2023.
The chief executive of the United Kingdom's Flight Safety Committee, Dai Whittingham, announced that the measures will be applicable to guarantee safety for all.
“There is much less interference perspective”, pointed out Dai, who added: “we have a different set of frequencies for 5G and there are lower energy settings than those allowed in the US”.
Apparently, the 5G antennas operating on aircraft caused an uproar in the US and was the reason for the cancellation of flights in 2022.
