For those interested in opening their own business, or work informally and want to regularize their situation, one of the alternatives is the registration of individual microentrepreneurs (MEI). According to information from SEBRAE, in 2021 alone, about 3.9 million Brazilians became MEI, an increase of 19.8% compared to the year 2020.

The MEI, in general, is a legal form for formalizing self-employed workers. When the person registers on the platform, he will have a National Legal Entity Registry (CNPJ) and an Enrollment Municipal and State, allowing loans to be made as a company and the opening of bank accounts for legal entities, for example. In addition, the MEI is entitled to benefits such as old-age or disability retirement, maternity pay and also sickness allowance.
To be an individual micro-entrepreneur, it is necessary to earn a maximum of R$ 81 thousand per year, which corresponds to, on average, R$ 6,750 per month. The interested party also cannot have a stake in another company as a partner or holder, and must have a maximum of one employee who receives a minimum wage or the minimum wage of the category for the function performed.
If the value is higher, the individual leaves the MEI category and becomes part of the Simples Nacional, which has a different tax regime. It is worth remembering that not all professions can be MEI. On the website of the Federal Government, there is a complete list of permitted functions that include manicurists, swimming pool attendants, astrologers and day laborers, among others.
Registering with MEI is free of charge, and the micro-entrepreneur will only have to pay the Simples Nacional monthly fee, which is currently around R$ 60.60. This is a fixed amount and the collection takes place through the MEI Simplified Collection Document, called DAS-MEI.
Those who carry out activities related to Commerce and Industry need to pay R$ 1 more, which refers to the ICMS (Tax on Circulation of Goods and Services). Those who are connected to the Service pay an additional R$ 5 for the ISS (Service Tax). Thus, the maximum amount charged can reach R$ 66.60 for those who carry out both activities.
To be a MEI in a legal way, you just need to have access to the internet, and you don't need to have an accountant. Just follow the steps below:
