Read:

Why does the ship float?

The ship's mass is distributed over a wide range, causing it to displace a large amount of water when launched overboard. In this way, it fills a space previously occupied by the liquid. The displaced water, which was in equilibrium, will tend to return to its place, thus exerting a pressure that acts on the hull, mainly on its underside. This pressure, called buoyancy, propels the ship to the surface and counterbalances its weight, preventing it from sinking.
