How do prisms work?

Made of glass, the prisms decompose white light into the seven colors it contains – red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet –, appearing to generate colored rays. The effect occurs for the following reason: when the colors that make up white pass through the glass of a prism, each of them _________ a deviation in its course. When returning to the air, the light beams are separated, following different directions from each other. Hence the appearance of independent rays, of different colors.
