Hummingbirds are small birds, measuring on average six to twelve centimeters in length and weighing between two and six grams. The violet hummingbird (hummingbird coruscans) is 13 to 15 centimeters long. Males weigh from 7.7 to 8.5 grams, while females weigh from 6.7 to 7.5 grams. This makes this species, without a doubt, the largest of the hummingbirds.
The plumage of the violet hummingbird is mostly a bright bluish green, with the exception of the wings, which are dark purple, and the beaks and feet, which are black.
It is found in the highlands of northern and western South America, including much of the Andes, the Venezuelan coastal strip and the tepuis. It is also found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Guyana and Peru. In Brazil, it is in the northern region, in the state of Roraima. It can live in a wide range of semi-open green habitats, such as coniferous or eucalyptus forests, plains and even gardens and parks.
The violet hummingbird is a nectivore bird (that is, it feeds on nectar), but its diet also includes small insects, which it is capable of capturing in mid-flight.
A very vocal and aggressively territorial bird. Lonely, they demarcate their territory through singing, an activity that takes up a good part of their day. The chants vary between subgroups, which develop their own calls.
