São Francisco is part of the history of many Brazilians. The waters flow through five states: from the source in the city of São Roque de Minas, in Minas Gerais, through Bahia, Sergipe, Pernambuco and Alagoas, until it flows into the ocean.
Altogether, it is 2,900 km long, large enough to be one of the most important watercourses in Brazil and South America. It was once a river with great abundance of water, but human action took some of the shine from Velho Chico.
The pollution of the bed, the unrestrained use of the land on the banks of the river, the construction of dams, the deforestation in the surroundings and urbanization contribute to the reduction of the river's flow. Sections, where there was a lot of water, are now decreasing.
