Pompeii was a beautiful and luxurious city in southern Italy. It was just 22 kilometers from Naples. On the 24th of August of the year 79 d. C., the volcano Vesuvius erupted and the hot lava covered the city with a layer two meters thick. Then, the volcano released ash and stones, which formed another layer of 10 to 15 meters. Between 20,000 and 30,000 inhabitants died suffocated by ashes or under the roofs of collapsing houses. Before the tragedy, Vesuvius had been inactive for 1,500 years. Excavations in the region only started in 1709. They revealed building walls and even entire paintings. Today Pompeii is a popular tourist spot in Italy.
