Archaeologists and historians claim that the first Olympic Games were held in the year 776 BC – or 2792 years ago! From that date, all games were grouped in the Greek city of Olympia – hence the name Olympics.
Every four years, people representing the gods announced the next games, which started with a big party. They also proclaimed the sacred truce, which meant that during the competition wars or any political rivalry were suspended. It was a great sacrilege to enter the city carrying weapons. Athletes and people who were going to watch the games arrived early for the party, which lasted seven days.
