The months of June and July are full of São João festivities across the country. Parties packed to the sound of forró and sertanejo, with lively square dances, are ideal for unrestricted physical exercise. They tone your muscles and help you lose calories in a very pleasant way: dancing.
Dancing is good for the health of the body and mind. Improves elasticity, flexibility, muscle strength and promotes quality of life. “Dance benefits the cardiorespiratory system and balance. The elderly, who at this stage suffer more falls, when they start to dance, they develop motor coordination better”, explains the ballroom dancing teacher of the Health Ministry's Geração Saúde program, Luciano Barbosa.
The teacher also indicates the activity to treat diseases, such as labyrinthitis, able to alleviate the feeling of imbalance. In rheumatic diseases, dancing strengthens the tendons. Those who have osteoporosis are also not left out of the dance. “With osteoporosis, people think they have to sit still, but studies show that with impacts on the body, for example, dancing forró, the tendency is to strengthen the bones and make the disease milder", complements.
And nobody dances with a frown. As a physical exercise, it releases endorphins, a hormone related to pleasure. Luciano says that many students got rid of stress and depression through the activity. “I have students who took black-label controlled medications and today they no longer take anything. Ballroom dancing invigorates enthusiasm and humor.”
Those who suffer from shyness can find in dance a good opportunity for socializing. According to Luciano, most of the students seek his classes with the intention of improving their flirting during parties. But dancing also improves life for two, rescuing that closeness of the beginning of a relationship. “Many married people think they are past this stage and don't need to learn to dance, but I always encourage them, because dancing is important for a good couple's relationship”, says the teacher.
