transforming principle

In 1928, British physician Frederick Griffith took an important step in the history of DNA. It worked with certain bacteria (Streptococcus pneumoniae) which, as the name suggests, caused a type of pneumonia. But these bacteria could be of two types: one was aggressive and killed the animals used in the experiments and the other had no effect.

What Griffith found was that if the aggressive bacteria were destroyed and its contents were brought into contact with the type that didn't cause pneumonia, it would turn aggressive. This simple experiment showed the existence of a “transforming principle” that did the magic of changing non-aggressive to aggressive. From there, many people _____________ know the identity of the “transforming principle”.
