“There isn't, oh people, oh no, a place like this one in the sertão…” You've certainly heard the beautiful song Luar do Sertão, from 1908, from the popular national songbook. But do you know who the author of this beautiful lyrics that enchants generations is? Catulo da Paixão Cearense, a Brazilian poet, playwright, musician, composer and singer.
The poet himself explains its origin: “Listen / I am Catulo / And Catulo da Paixão / I am from Ceará in the name / But I was born in Maranhão”. That's it. Contrary to what it seems, Catulo was born in São Luís do Maranhão, and not in Ceará, on October 8, 1863. He even lived for a few years in the Ceará backlands, having gone through many difficulties with his family there.
In 1880, Catulo moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he spent most of his life.
