Desertification – or drought – is a process of degradation of soil, vegetation and water resources, which can turn the affected area into a desert. Generally, the phenomenon is caused by climatic variations and human action. In an attempt to contain this threat, the International Convention to Combat Desertification was launched in 1993, which ended on June 17, 1994, the date that became the World Day to Fight against Desertification. The Convention was signed by more than 100 countries, including Brazil, and its resolutions entered into force in 1996.
